Help Understanding Complications

Two of my watch apps (CNN and Hue) appear in complications. I have moved both apps between include and "do not include". When I select a watch face with complications, Hue appears in the list of complications that are available. CNN is not available. This is the case when they are included AND when they are not included.

Shouldn't both apps be available when included and not available when excluded?

I believe that this has to do with the CNN complication, specifically. Certain complications are only available in specific areas of certain watch faces. The CNN complication does not appear to be an option for the smaller box complications that generally appear in the corners of a watch face. I did find that I could select CNN as a complication using the Modular watch face, in the middle (wide) complication area.

It is likely that this restriction was set due to the amount of text required for the CNN complication to be useful. Top news stories are definitely displayed for me when enabling it as described above.

Hi

Apple Watch offers complications in various sizes. When an app supports complications, it may not necessarily offer them in any or all available sizes on any given watch face:

Change the watch face on your Apple Watch - Apple Support

Complications supported by the CNN app include, for example (this list is not exhaustive):

  • The large complication in the centre of the Modular watch face.
  • The complication at the bottom of the Mickey / Minnie Mouse watch faces.
  • The complication at the bottom of the Utility watch face.

It does not support the small, square complication.

For the best performance from third-party apps and access to the latest features, check that you have installed any available updates (via the App Store > Updates on your iPhone).

Apple Watch should certainly reflect the Complications setting from the Watch app (for supported complication sizes).

As your watch does not currently recognise changes in this setting, first try these steps:

Change the setting for each affected app to the opposite of your desired setting (include / do not include) and then back again, allowing a few moments in between:

  • On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch > Complications > Edit (upper-right).

Close the Watch app and then restart both your iPhone and your watch:

If the issue then persists, it may help to unpair and re-pair your watch:

Thank you for the great info and step by step guidance. Even after unpairing/pairing to the backup, excluded complications continue to be available within watch faces. I am curious if this is a bug or if I don't understand the function of including and excluding complications. Perhaps including/excluding does something other than populating the available options within the watch face complications. The documentation I have found on this topic in limited.
