Q: itunes and two copies on ext harddisks

Hi I have my music in a cloud library but I also have a copy on an ext. Hard disk connected to my work mac. And at home I also have a copy connected to an ext. Hard disk through another mac  (like to have an extra back up - if apple should ....) Also it is nice to be able to bring one them with me when I travel away from wifi connections. So basically I have two music library both connected to my cloud music and I wonder if a new cd automatically is copied to both Hard disks or just stays in the cloud? Also I wonder if there is an easy way to find out if everything from the cloud is copied down on my hard disk?

Am I making any sense here?

If it originates on your computer it will stay on the computer unless you delete it. I presume when you say iCloud library you meant Match or Apple Music.  A copy of what is on your computer will be put in the Match component of those services.  If they originate in iCloud they will stream to the computer unless you download them.

iTunes Match - http://www.apple.com/itunes/itunes-match/ - see FAQ at end too

Download all songs from Match [iCloud] at once  - https://discussions.apple.com/message/18223535#18223535

    "Select Music.

    Select Tunes Store.

    Select Purchased on right side.

    Select Not in My Library.

Click Download All at lower right."

Okay and thank you Limnos. This basically means that having two "hard copies" is a bad idea and it means that every time I want to add a new album/cd I have to use the same machine and the same ext. harddisk and afterwards download it to my ext. harddisk and then update the other one somehow... hmmm ... thank you. It seems like my cloud music will suffer from the same problems that I have with photos. It is does not expect you to have two computers with "safety" copies of your pictures and songs on both.

I have been looking on the links but it still seems to me that there is no way of checking whether all my album are downloaded to my harddisk unless I check every 5.000 albums individually (looking for at little cloud in the left corner), is that right? And when I mistakenly wrote iCloud I just meant that cloud I purchased to store all my music on line and that is partly Match (1/3 of my music didn-t exist in apples archives ;-). I don't use apple music.

Thank you again Limnos and feel free to respond if ...

If you want to set up syncing of iTunes libraries along with devices you are better off using a service such as Match.  If you have a copy of something Apple does not have, Apple will place a copy of your music in your private user space on Match so you can use it on your other devices.  This may not be 100% identical to the original file but it is the closest you will get without having to to be excessively organized and manually verify everything every time you add a file to one computer or the other.
