I am using an external microphone with blue icicle interface. The mic shows up in my system preferences sound input, as well as in the garageband preferences audio/midi input, however there is only a blank space where the button should be. I cannot record.

Perhaps the main GarageBand window is too small. Drag corner to make the window wider. You may need to increase the resolution of the display in the System Preferences > Display, if the record button does not appear in the Toolbar.
Or is the "record enable" button missing in the track header? Then go to the Track menu:
Track > Track header > Show record Enable Button
I have done show record enable button however it does not show up. there is a blank space where the button should be. The solo button and the input monitoring button separate leaving a space where the enable record button should be.
Record enable button does not appear.
