Q: My wifi disconnects when I put my mac mini to sleep.  Is this a new security feature in macOS Sierra?

Since I upgraded to macOS Sierra, my system has disconnected from my wifi network when I selected "Sleep".  Is this a security feature to minimize external access?

Thanks,

Dick

Wifi is always off when a Mac sleeps.

Are you saying that when you waken the Mac wifi does not automatically reconnect?

Thanks for the reply.  To answer your question, yes, it does not automatically reconnect.  I have to do it manually.  As a test, I just tried again, with the same results.  I just looked at System Preferences and I don't see any changes to the network settings I had before the upgrade.

Power off and then back on your router.

Remove that network for the list of networks and rejoin the network

I did as you directed and the first time I put the system to sleep, it found my network on awakening.  However, I have tested it 4 more times and it has reverted to "no network selected" in System Preferences.  I have promoted my Apple network (using a Time Capsule) to the top of the networks list in advanced settings.  The location is set to "automatic".  While it is not a major issue to manually connect each time, it is strange that with 2 networks in the house, my system does not connect to either after leaving sleep mode.

Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712

System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.

    10.5.x/10.6.x/10.7.x/10.8.x instructions...

System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.

The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.

    10.4 instructions...

Is that Interface dragged to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations.

    If using Wifi/Airport...

Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.

For 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

    208.67.222.222

    208.67.220.220

(There may be better or faster DNS numbers in your area, but these should be a good test).

    Click OK.
