Are you backing up to a new computer? Normally you're only prompted for the backup password when you switch to encrypted backup, or try to restore from one. If you don't remember deliberately choosing to use backup encryption then perhaps you changed the setting accidentally and responded with your default password at the time. Things to try are an empty password, any of your past Apple ID, computer or Wi-Fi passwords, or your device PINs. If you cannot backup to iTunes then backup to iCloud.

    According to this article:

About encrypted backups in iTunes - Apple Support

"iTunes doesn't encrypt your backups by default. To encrypt a backup in iTunes for the first time, YOU need to turn on the password-protected Encrypt backup option. Then, iTunes automatically makes encrypted backups for that device from then on." Also, "There is no way to recover your information or turn off Encrypt Backup if you lose or forget the password."

However, I have read where other users like yourself claim they NEVER set-up an encrypted backup.  Be that as it may, you do get an unlimited number of guesses for the password.  Try anything you might have possibly used.  Some users claimed that a "blank" password (simply hit the Enter key) worked for them.  Give it a try.

If worse comes to worse, one procedure that might work is something like:

    1. Backup to iCloud

    2. Reset as new phone on iTunes

    3.  Backup to iTunes (in a sense - an empty, but unencrypted backup)

    4. Restore from iCloud

    5. Backup again to iTunes (now unencrypted backup that has most of your data)
