I cannot log-out of Gmail or Google.

I cannot access the drop-down menu in Gmail to sign-out.

The icons in the upper right of the screen (grid, alert bell, account icon) move or disappear when clicked but do not activate their drop-down menus or actions. It's very odd. This began two weeks ago before I upgraded to Sierra and is continuing now.

I know I can open another browser and log out from there. I don't want to do that every time, so please do not suggest "work-arounds" of that sort. I'm sure this can be fixed properly so that OS X works seamlessly with popular email services.

This is obviously a problem with Safari (since I can log in and out easily with Firefox and Opera), so I am hoping to get a real, Mac/OS X-based permanent fix for this. Many thanks.

Hello GrantusM,

Thanks for that info and choosing the Apple Support Communities. I know how important using Safari on your Mac is to you! If I understand correctly, you are unable to log out of your account when using Safari on your Mac to access mail.google.com, even though other browsers work as expected. To resolve this issue, I suggest starting with the troubleshooting in this article for Safari loading all the elements of a page correctly:

If Safari doesn‘t load a page or webpage items are missing

If that does not get it running correctly, you should continue by using safe mode to start up your Mac so that it performs certain checks, delete system cache files, verifies your startup disk, and attempts to repair directory issues if needed. Log into your user account and test the issue while in safe mode and then restart normally and test the issue again.

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up
Limited graphics performance in OS X recovery or safe mode

You can also figure out if unexpected behavior is related to a user file or setting by trying to reproduce the issue from another user account. This process includes creating a new user account, logging in to it, and testing for the issue.

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

Cheers!

Hi, since 2 weeks, I encountered exactly the same problem. I found that I can easily log out from my gmail account with safari by just ctrl clicking on the icon and choose "open in another window". But still no access to my google account or parameters. I've tried to disable javascript in safari's preferences and connecting to gmail in html mode. This way I have access to my account and all the security and confidentiality parameters. I've tried with my others gmail account and the issue remains everytime with any of my accounts. I've tried to repair permissions, empty dos caches but no improvement. I'm confused, but happy to see that I'm not the only one to get this issue.

Please help!

Thank you very much. I'd already cleared the history once before which didn't solve it. I tried starting in Safe Mode but that didn't alter the situation either but I tried clearing history again after that step and that seems to have solved the problem.

Those of you who are experiencing the same difficulties, please check the steps above from jdo_apple (marked as "Solved").

Many thanks, jdo_apple, and I hope this helps the rest of you experiencing this!

I had this problem also but one person indicated it could be the fault of an extension. I tried deleting several extensions and when I deleted Duck Duck search extension the Icon and my sign off abilities came back. I tested the result by adding Duck Duck again and the Icon for signing off did strange things again but didn’t present any sign off , Weird.
