Q: How to use iPhone 5S without SIM

I bought a new iPhone 7 at full price so I could keep my iPhone 5S to use as a wifi device.  This was working well until a few days ago.  Suddenly the iPhone 5 screen had that white welcome screen that happens when you install a new iOS.  Perhaps it automatically downloaded iOS 10.  Now I can't get past anything without a SIM.  Can I take the one out of my iPhone 7 temporarily and use it to get it going?  Will that mess up anything?  Or is there a better method?  I've researched online about activating it without a SIM and none of those methods work.  My carrier is AT&T if that matters. Thanks.

You can use it just fine without a SIM. What you can't do is activate it without a SIM. You can use the SIM from your 7 to activate the old phone, then put the SIM back into the 7. If anything happens that requires re-activation, you will have to put a SIM back in it to activate it, then you can remove the SIM.

There is no way at all to activate it without a SIM.
