Q: iOS10 iPhone 7+ Phone app screen freeze

I have an iPhone 7+, 256GB running iOS 10.0.2. When I enter the Phone App the app starts but the screen becomes non-responsive. I have to double-tap the Home button and end the app. When I restart the app it works fine until the next time.

 

This can be an issue if there is an emergency, if I have to go thru this to call 9-1-1 it could be serious.

 

I am trying to isolate some other trigger for it. So far it seems to be just the Phone app itself, no other apps seem to be doing this.

 

I don't know if prior versions of iOS 10 did this or not. I never saw that occur on my older iPhone 6+ that had iOS10 installed a week before I traded it in on the 7+.

    Did you activate this iPhone 7 from a backup of your iPhone 6 Plus? If so, you may want to try restoring the iPhone to factory and testing the phone app before adding any additional content to the phone. See if you can duplicate this phone app freezing problem at that time. If the phone works correctly, then go ahead and restore your backup. If the problem returns, the issue is with your backup. You will have to restore the phone to factory again, and then sync back your content individually without using the backup. That can isolate the problem app or data.

    I did activate it from the old phone.

     

    I will try this tomorrow and see if I can recreate it. The issue is that it is intermittant so it will take a while to find out if it does it with the factory settings.

     

    This morning the Phone App was frozen again at the last screen I was on last night. I used Siri to make a call and then after that the app worked fine again.

     

    Could I delete the Phone app and reinstall it instead of restoring the whole phone?

    No you cannot. The phone app is a native portion of the iOS and is not separate like some others. The only thing you can do is restore. Either way, if you have a problem with the backup, you are going to have to restore to wipe the phone and get rid of the corrupt data.

    Well, I restored my iPhone to factory. I tried it with no extra apps installed and the glitch came up. I added a few of the apps I had before and yesterday did the 10.0.3 update and it still freezes.

     

    I suppose the next thing is the Verizon Store or Apple Store...
