Q: System lock- Random and with iTunes - How to read the console?

Hi Guys. I just bought a new Mac Pro, cloned my system on it and upgraded to Sierra.

Now it keeps freezing- Everything will lock up, and it’ll restart about 10 seconds later.

It happens during various tasks, but i can consistently set it off if I open iTunes-  the whole computer will freeze within a few seconds.

I tried lots of things, including changing the RAM, playing around with USB devices, turning off the network, etc.

So a question, where can I find out more of the issue by looking inside the Console? Surely it logs info when there is a hard lock and restart? If so, I cant find it.

Or if anyone has any other advice?

Cheers!

    Greetings, R3kl355,

Congratulations on your new Mac Pro! From your post, your Mac Pro on macOS Sierra keeps freezing and restarting, especially while using iTunes. I'll be glad to help you with this.

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn‘t finish starting up -- Safe mode will make sure your Mac starts up correctly. Test how it responds in Safe Mode. If there are no issues, reboot normally and test in your own user account.

    What is safe mode?

Safe mode (sometimes called safe boot) is a way to start up your Mac so that it performs certain checks, and prevents some software from automatically loading or opening. Starting your Mac in safe mode does the following:

    • Verifies your startup disk, and attempts to repair directory issues if needed
    • Loads only required kernel extensions
    • Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically
    • Disables user-installed fonts
    • Deletes font caches, Kernel cache and other system cache files

Together, these changes can help resolve or isolate issues related to your startup disk.

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac -- If the issue is also happening in safe mode, use this article to test another user account. This will demonstrate if the issue is isolated to your account, or if it's system wide.

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities and take care!

Thanks for your help again. It ended up being a hardware issue, the computer started locking up on boot. Replacing it with a new Mac Pro and cloning the HDD across solved the issue.
