Q: iOS 10 / Mac Sierra Universal Clipboard not reliable

One of the new features of macOS Sierra (v10.12) and iOS 10 is the Universal Clipboard; in other words, I should be able to copy something on my iMac Retina 5k, then paste it into a field on my iPad Pro 9.3 running iOS 10 (v10.0.2). Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't. It virtually *always* freezes things up for 15-20 seconds when I attempt it. While I would expect some momentary lag in the wireless transfer, a total lockup seems unwarranted.

The iPad is situated to the left of the iMac, only inches away, so distance should not be an issue; there are no other connectivity issues such as the mouse or keyboard losing connection, or the wifi signal being weak.

Anybody else experiencing this? Is this a known issue? Thanks!

More info would be useful. What are you trying to copy from your iMac, from what program? What "field" are you trying to paste into in what program when it doesn't work?

I haven't tested it thoroughly but what I have tried works.

    Don't feel alone.

Like Airdrop inconsistent at best.  If we are lucky a 10.12.1 update will help.

    Thanks for your response.

In the particular instance that prompted the post, I had searched for a translation in Google Translate, using Safari. As you know, the Google Translate set appears at the top of the search results. I copied the translated phrase (5 or so words). I then attempted to paste it into a response field in Facebook. As often happens, this locked up entry for about 20 seconds. I don't recall if it's always Facebook or not.

On further examination, I found that the bluetooth pairing connection is intermittent as well; however, even when the connection is dropped, I'm able to copy from the iPad to the iMac after a brief pause - but not the other way around. The same holds true when Bluetooth is paired.

It'll be a very useful feature for me when it's finally working reliably. It's sort of an "almost" feature at this point.

You're welcome. I went to test further. I tested between a MacBook Air and an iPad Air 2. I do have an iPad Pro and a 5k iMac but they were in different rooms so this test was just easier. I copied a couple Google Translate phrases and 4 different images of Jane Mansfield while in Safari on the MBA and pasted them into Notes on the iPad without a problem. FWIW, the MBA has a clean install of Sierra without any added third-party software.

FYI, you don't have to pair the devices.

As an aside, I AirDrop'd a photo from the iPad to the MBA without a problem.
