Q: locked Mac internal HD. Crashes halfway through startup

is there anyway to unlock my internal Mac hardrive without lossing my data which is not It backed up.  Apple support said it has to do with some sort of incription a i chose when first setup the imac and have to bring it in to the store which I can't.   They had me run disk utilities and first aid on the Mac HD drive but it gave a error 8. Then trying to  reinstall OS capitan 10.11 it does not let me intal in  Mac HD drive saying it is locked.  Does that mean dead? Or just It accessible which I am hoping so I can recover it with its data.   I booted with and external drive as some forums suggeste to run disk utiliies but same results- still locked.  Trying now to copy Mac HD to external disk with operating system installed but nothing is copying as far as I can tell.

havent seen any posts running new disk utilities capitano or sierra that have encoutwred this problem, everyone just tries to erase disk and start from scratch, which is my LAST resort if I can't forgive how to unlock it.

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2012), OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)
