Oct 14, 2016 10:31 PM in response to rlo from up northby sberman,Are your notes stored in iCloud? If they're somewhere else, I'm not sure they're upgradeable. See this article:
Upgrade your notes with iOS 9 and OS X El Capitan - Apple Support
Your profile says you are running OS X Yosemite. If you have not upgraded to El Capitan (or Sierra), that would explain your issue.

Oct 15, 2016 9:57 PM in response to sbermanby rlo from up north,Somehow some of my notes are on gmail, the rest are in folders on my iPhone. I have no idea how some notes ended up on gmail - the notes on / associated with gmail don't have the new features available on iOS 9 (my iPhone is actually running iOS 10.0). Moving a note from the gmail folder to any other folder and the notes iOS 9 features appear.

Oct 15, 2016 10:19 PM in response to rlo from up northby sberman,Well, it seems as if it would be a good idea to house your notes in exactly one place - all in the same place - and remove all the other possibilities from the Notes application.
If you're running iOS 10, you can manage accounts at Settings > Notes.
