How to use eject button on keyboard to eject external drive

So I have a Mac Pro 3,1 (Early 2008) and decided to use an external disc drive for convenience, but I have a problem: Keyboard eject button does not control it. Basically I want to switch (if possible) from it ejecting internal disc drive to controlling my external. Any help would be appreciated, as this is bothering me.

What "keyboard eject button" do you mean? There is a key that controls the optical drive's tray. There is also a command key that can be used to eject mounted volumes, command-e. This will unmount an external drive, but you have to first select the drive that you want to eject. Or do you mean the little eject symbol that appears next to the name of a drive or partition in certain situations?

On a Mac Pro silver tower with two DVD drives installed, holding the Option key while clicking the Eject Icon on the menuBar produces a submenu with:

Eject Upper SuperDrive

Eject Lower Superdrive

Pressing Eject while holding the Option key opens the Lower Superdrive.

If there were a feature you could grab, i expect they would "hang it on those same hooks".

Thank you both for your help, but I think you misunderstand me. When I had one internal drive, pressing the eject button on my keyboard opened and closed the optical drive. Basically, I want it to do that to the external drive after I've disconnected the internal drive. But now that I've disconnected the internal drive, the button does absolutely nothing. I was just curious if there was a way around that.
