Q: wrong password - not

Firstly why was I ever stupid enough to install Siri on my Mac. and secondly If I get one more message telling me to sign into my aol account and then telling me my password is wrong ITS NOT WRONG  I will take a hammer to my very expensive and crap machine and sMash the useless piece of junk that it is..  Why did I let myself be talked into leaving my Microsoft computer?  Biggest mistake I ever made... I spoke to the person who set up my IMAC and said what my aol password - he straightaway came back with the password I have had with aol for the last 18 years.  This same password is the one  my IMAC keeps telling me its wrong.

    Hello katerich48,

Thanks for seeking help with your AOL password and your iMac here in the Apple Support Communities. I understand how it can be when things refuse to work properly. There are a few reasons you may be experiencing this issue with your computer. I am happy to check this out with you.

The first thing we want to ensure is that all your data is safe. You can make a backup using Time Machine and an external hard drive. Use this article for help making a backup of your Mac: Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac.

Once you know your data is safe, please go to your AOL mail by going to this link: AOL Mail. If it automatically logs you in through your saved passwords, please sign out. Once you are able to, enter your email user name, and then manually enter your password. The reason we are doing this is to check two things.

    1. That the keyboard is functioning properly with the shift or caps lock, and it is typing in a character for each character you enter in on the keyboard.

    2. When you press enter or return on your keyboard, do any secondary alerts, error messages, or questions pop up?

If there are any secondary alerts, error messages or questions that pop up, please answer them, clear them, or modify what is necessary to bypass that message. Once it is gone, your iMac should be able to get into the account again using Mac mail.

If you have the AOL 2-Factor authentication enabled on your AOL account, you will not be able to use Mac mail to check your mail until you provide an application specific password inside your AOL account so that your AOL security knows that the Mac mail app on your iMac is allowed to access this email account. This is discussed in this article I was able to find about AOL 2-Factor Authentication here: 2-Factor Authentication: Stronger than your password alone under the section titled "Why do non-AOL apps require application-specific passwords?".

I was also able to find this help article: How do I set up other email applications to send and receive my AOL Mail? There is a section specific to Mac computers titled "Mac (Apple) Mail" and then the subsection for setting up mail called "Set up your AOL Mail account in Mac(Apple) Mail".

Thanks again and have a great rest of your day.
