Hello RobinRane,
Thanks for asking about your Contacts not displaying properly after macOS Sierra here in the Apple Support Communities. I understand how important it is to have all your data organized. I am happy to offer some things to check this for you.
The first thing we want to ensure is that all your data is safe. You can make a backup using Time Machine and an external hard drive. Use this article for help making a backup of your Mac: Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac.
Once your data is safe, please go to System Preferences, iCloud. If you are using Contacts synced through iCloud, there will be a check box next to Contacts in there. Go ahead and uncheck it. You will get a pop up asking you to save or delete the contacts on your Mac. I recommend saving them. Once it finishes, go ahead and re-check it. This will turn on iCloud contacts again, and get the information to sync with your computer again. You will want to click Messages, and then click the word Messages up next to the Apple. Then click quit. Go ahead and double click to re-open Messages.
If you are still experiencing issues with Messages not showing your contacts, click the word Messages up next to the Apple again, and then click Preferences. In the new window that opens, please click the Accounts tab. What accounts are listed there? Are any of them marked as inactive? What about in iCloud.com? When you log in with the same Apple ID that is listed in Messages > Preferences, do you have your contacts listed there?
If you do, you can make a backup or archive of your iCloud data from there, and then we can import it into your Contacts app on the Mac using this article: Archive or make copies of your iCloud data to make the vCard archive, and then use this article: Contacts for Mac: Import contacts to import the vCard archive into your Mac computer.
Thanks again and have a great rest of your day.
