Q: Can iLife apps be loaded with El Capitan 10.11.6 as the OS?

My current OS is El Capitan 10.11.6 (MBP 13” mid-2012). The bare bones of what I want/need is 3 of the programs from the iLife '09 and/or iLife '11 packages, namely: Garageband '11 (or GB 6), iMovie ('09 or '11) and iPhoto (9).

Is it possible to load just those 3 programs onto my laptop? In addition to or even in place of the apps that came with El Cap? If "YES" can someone give me a clue as to how to do it? I still have the iLife installation disks and/or images for iLife ’09 and ’11.

If it turns out that that isn't possible, and--assuming that running Snow Leopard on this MBP is something that can even be done--can someone give me  or point me in the direction of step-by-step instructions? I tried making a Snow Leopard Installation bootable USB flash drive, but when I went to boot from it, I landed on a faded-out bios-type screen with a message saying I needed to restart my laptop (which I did, but that just took me back to that same screen, an endless circle of going nowhere).

So. Does anyone know what I’m doing wrong? I read somewhere online that in order to go back to Snow Leopard, the entire [current] hard drive would have to be erased(!?) and that’s just a little too drastic for me. Help???

Thank you BIG-TIME in advance for any information/help you can cast this way! Have a fun day...

Love and peace,

Sarine

no problem...okay, let me try to help you out here. Basically once you have installed El Capitan, or Yosemite or even Sierra, you cannot go back to your old OS without erasing your hard drive. that being said, what you could do is get your iLife dvd's and put 'em in your dvd drive. The installers should show up and you can install them from there. I don't think El Capitan came with a whole bunch of apps, though. If trying to install the older versions doesn't work, you can get iMovie on the App store and I think GarageBand as well for $28 for the two of them,. iPhoto has been replaced with Photos and is built into the OS, so it's free, as far as I know.  you used to be able to get something called Pacifist which would let you install just the things you wanted to from the Snow Leopard dvd (which I'm assuming you're using here)

--could also be under purchases in the App store if linked to your previous Apple ID

    hope this helps a bit

hey thx for the fast response, Johnb-one! k, i'm going to go for it and see what happens when i put one of the old iLife DVDs in (honestly, i was kind of chicken to just try it before checking in with someone)... i'll come back and let you know what happens with that (it may be a little while, lots on my "to-do" list today)...

thank you sooooo much again for sharing your knowledge and have a fun day...

well, i went for it and tried doing a custom install of both iLife '09 and '11 -- i got partial results... i seem to now have iDVD and iWeb, but the older version of GarageBand--soooo much better than the latest version apple's presented and what I reeeeally wanted to have again--was greyed out and unable to be installed... rats! i sort of figured that that would be the case since i already downgraded to the newer diminished (ya, that's right) version of GB (10.1.2) when i installed el capitan and i don’t think apple stuff is able to have 2 different versions of the same program running at the same time (although that would be hella cool)… so i’m going to pause on any action for the moment

another program i really super-wanted was iPhoto (yes, i have "Photos" but much prefer iPhoto and want it back!) this is a weird one: i was able to get it (9.0) from the installation disk, but i can’t access it, there’s one of those circles-with-a-line-thru-it (that means no) overtop of the iPhoto icon and when i boink on it it says i need to update to the latest version… i managed to get the 9.1 update though it weirdly said 9.0.1 before downloading, then after uploading it reads as 9.1—not sure what that means but it was from apple's site and should be a legitimate update, but the big ‘no’-thing is still over the iPhoto icon and i'm now stuck... i've searched for more updates with no success... help? any ideas?

last but not least, i feel the same about iMovie as iPhoto: i MUCH preferred the older version and thought it might be installed over top of the sucky version 10.1.2 iMovie that i have (meaning i thought it might just replace it) but iMovie seems to have not changed with my new installation attempts...

that an older version of something can simply be loaded and installed and replace whatever version is currently running, that way people can keep using the version they like the best! whadayathink of that? : )

thx again for your input, i totally appreciate it (and would even more appreciate more ha ha)! have a fun day…

yup-close but no cigar, right...I'm kinda with you on the older version idea. If something works and works well, and you're used to it, why mess it up? New, maybe, but improved? Still, that seems to be the norm nowadays. Stuff gets replaced with something newer which might not be better, but then the older stuff just goes away. I'd be happy, too if they kept it around and called it "iMovie Classic" or something like that. I think you can have two versions of the same program running at the same time if you want, and if the OS supports it. Why you'd want to do that, I don't know.

There are ways around the restriction, and I'm sure you could find a version that sorta works, but it's not really legitimate and all that**cough** BitTorrent**cough, so I can't really discuss it here. For me what worked was starting out with Snow Leopard, then installing iLife, then updating the OS from Yosemite, to Mavericks, to El Capitan and finally Sierra. Apple used to have an easier way to find the older updates, all of them, but now...eh...you get what you get. iMovie 9.09 is still available though, and iLife 11 is also still available for about $40 from somewhere. iPhoto is at 9.61

and works with OS 10.10, but with Yosemite (10.10.3) it's just Photos. You can download it and give a try, but expect a few conflicts as you get steered towards Photos, even though you don't really want to use it, you'd prefer iPhoto instead
