Q: Will Sierra OS allow me to maintain my photos in iPhoto?

Ever since the Tiger OS I have used iPhoto for storage and organization of my photos with all editing done in Elements as an external editor. I am continuing to do so in Yosemite OS. I definitely prefer to maintain my photos in iPhoto rather than transfer them to Photos. Will Sierra OS allow me to continue to maintain my photos in iPhoto and edit them in Elements as an external editor? Please advise.

Yes if you have iPhoto 9.6.1 - but it is no longer supported and will quit working someday - and Photos is much better (different with different work flows and a learning curve but better in nearly every way) and will not quit working on you without warning after some upgrade

    Larry,

Thanks for the feedback. Thank God I have iPhoto 9.6.1! I’m pleased to learn that I can continue to use it with the Sierra OS. I realize that the day will come when iPhoto will no longer work with the Apple OS, and I will likely end up with my thousands of images in Photos. Hopefully by that time the Photos program will provide a link to external editors like iPhoto has for the entire time I have used it. I have never edited any images in iPhoto, but it provides a link to Elements which I have used as the external editor for all of my images.

Photos has a much better interface to external editors than iPhoto did called extensions (this has been a feature for over a year now) - specifically the External Editors for Photos extension ($0.00 from the app store) lets you use any photos editor on your Mac not just the single one you set up  --  this extensions capability is one of several reasons Photos is much better than iPhoto

and with Photos expanded editing you probably will find yourself using external editors less and less as it does much more

    Larry,

Thanks much for this additional information about External Editors for Photos. This appears to be the answer to my concerns about having my images ending up in Photos.

It is not only the External Editors extension, that makes Photos very versatile. You can easily call other apps, if they provide their own app extensions.

Applications can offer specific editing tools in a unified way. For example, instead of calling Affinity Photos as an external editor, I prefer to use the Affinity app extensions from Photos - I can directly use the Haze removal tool or the retouch tool without having to launch Affinity as an external editor. It is much quicker:
