Q: Looking to upgrade Mac Pro Ram

Hello, I currently have a Mac Pro (Mid 2010)

Processor 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon

Memory 16GB 1066 MHz DDR3

I have 4 sticks of ram 4x4 GB DDR3 ECC - 1066 MHz

And I want to upgrade to 32G total ram... I'm hoping since Apple wouldn't help me (cause its something they don't carry anymore) that someone could tell me exactly what I'm looking for? I have zero clue and don't want to spend hundreds of dollars to find out I have the wrong product So any help would be amazing! Thank you!

Mac Pro, iOS 10.0.2, null

Yes. You should choose RAM from a vendor which advertises compatibility with your Mac model.

OWC (macsales.com) is a reliable source of RAM for Macs.

Are you planning to replace the 4GB DIMMs with 8GB DIMMS?

On this site you'll find all informations needed including a software checking your system to find the correct RAM.

What kind of information do you need. You already have the specs of the RAM that works.

Personally, I would not bother with 1066 MHz memory and replace it all with 1333 MHz. Should you ever plan to put in a more powerful CPU, e.g. six-core Xeon 56xx series, the system can take advantage of the faster RAM, although you probably won't really notice the difference.

According to Apple, you can put in 4 GB DIMM's in each slot, but the system will also support 8 GB DIMM's. Since you have a quad-core, you only have 4 slots, so in order to upgrade to 32 GB you will have to replace all RAM.

You can use DDR3 PC3-10600 ECC 1333MHZ or PC-8500 ECC 1066MHz, 240 pin ECC Registered. Personally, I'd search for PC3-10600E 240 32 GB on ebay.

Mac are picky about memory. Just meeting the specs that Apple states does not guarantee they will work in a Mac.

There are many posts in these forums when the users just matched specs and had problem. But when they replaced the that memory with memory guaranteed to work the Mac worked fine.

Macs are not pickier than other systems.

I guess you have not seen the many posts in these forums when users just matched the specs and the Mac did not work/frequently had problems.
