I believe that the Apple Pencil will only work with the iPad Pro.

No. It only works with the iPad Pros. There are products that will work on the iPhone. Look for them at Amazon.com.

I Would suggest trying the Jot Dash. It's a great stylus that doesn't have to awkwardly stick out of your device to charge.
