If you're talking about the login screen, there may be a question mark in the password field. If so, that will give you a password hint.

If that doesn't work, restart it and wait at the password field. There may be a prompt that says you can power down the MacBook to recover your password. (If FileVault is on) If so, hold the power button until the computer turns off, and then tap the power button to restart. You'll get a password reset screen. Follow the prompts.

You may also be able to reset your password with your Apple ID. Try entering passwords three times in a row. That may prompt you for the Apple ID option. Follow the prompts.

Thank you Stuart for taking the time to reply. I've tried most of your suggestions but none of them work. I'm more or less resigned to taking the MacBook to the local Apple repairer to see if they can do anything. I tried entering my Apple ID three times to no avail. Also tried starting up with a Mac OS 10 CD, but can't get past the password request box. I also use an iMac, an iPad and an iPod so maybe there is some interference. I've used Apple computers for 25 years so perhaps a little more patience is required — I'll see the repair people in the course of this week. Again with thanks for your help which is much appreciated. David McRobbie

Thank you Eric for taking the time to help with my problem. Following your suggestion I was able to get into the MacBook Air and tantalisingly see a 'Change Password' icon, but alas it was greyed over so not able to be opened. I'm going to see one of Apple's genius helpers to see if he/she can do something.

Again, my thanks and regards, David

You are welcome. Do you have FileVault activated? Did you try from the Recovery Partition?
