Q: Using terminal

Ive lately started out getting into Terminal on my Macbook Pro OS X and running a few simple sudo cmds,by typing the

cmd (sudo launchctl list) i stumbled upon a few procceses my Activity Monitor apparently won't show me, i would like to sort out what they basically are for.If anyone could help me out it would be very much appreciated.Ive looked them up on the net but could not really differentiate by all of them if they are suppose to be running or not.

The Procceses are:

org.ntp.ntpd

org.postfix.master

com.paceap.eden.licensed

com.anchorfree.ajaxserver

com.vix.cron

org.cups.cupsd

Im mostly concerned about (com.anchorfree.ajaxserver) wich is hotspot shield,i tried to sniff all of the files out with the easy finder but apparently there is still something of it in my system even though i did a clean reinstall a few months ago.

Any help or advice would be great.

    Hi Eric....

Thanks for the quick response, at the moment i can't really tell if theres any problem, since I've upgraded to an SSD and 16 GB Ram my machine runs very fast, the reason why I've upgraded was the lack of speed beach balling and very high cpu usage by Kernel task Window Server and a few others,in the end the most reasonable solution for me was that i also had not enough RAM.

Like i said in the first post i started out getting into Terminal executing a few of the simpler sudo cmds and stumbled upon these jobs.

What is you actual aim here?

If you want to remove the 'hotspot shield' your safest option is to find the original vendor's instructions for uninstalling. https://support.hotspotshield.com/hc/en-us/articles/204905470

Failing that you may be able to 'File > Show files…' when running the original installer (assuming it had one) - which can indicate some files which need removing.

Simply deleting a few files in the hope that it uninstalls software is misguided, you need to be thorough otherwise issues will keep coming back or may get worse.

Your uptime is listed as 30 days - consider a reboot BEFORE you begin 'troubleshooting' launch daemons.

I strongly suggest you think twice about poking around with Terminal & assuming everything you don't understand or don't recognise is bad & should be removed. e.g. cron is part of the OS, as is cups, ntp and postfix.

Pace is part of a third party DRM system for certain software - you won't be able to use certain apps if you remove that or stop the services it uses.

Personally I'd update or remove soundflower & teamviewer if they are not required (again via the developers own instructions).

I'm also unclear on what these are…

        [loaded]    com.nchsoftware.soundtap.schedule.LikeSurvey.plist (2014-08-20) [Support]

        [loaded]    com.nchsoftware.wavepad.schedule.LikeSurvey.plist (2014-08-20) [Support]

They look like adware/ junk to me? Do you know what they are?

Sorry for being unclear,my aim was to find out what these jobs where for,i understand that messing around with Terminal can be very dangerous,i did uninstall hotspot a while ago.The last two ones are ok they are from a music software I'm using.I was just wondering why i still have something from Hotspot Shield on my Machine even though i did uninstall.

You uninstalled via the developers guidelines?

In theory any launchd jobs should be stopped & unloaded by an uninstaller, however it's possible that the plist was simply deleted but the task was not stopped. Rebooting should cause that job to fail & be unloaded. Check again after a restart.

Please be aware that launchd jobs may be started on demand, so you may see jobs listed but are not currently in use. Reading the output is the key to know what is active/ loaded etc.

As always the manual can help…

    https://developer.apple.com/legacy/library/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPag es/man1/launchctl.1.html

Or ask if you are unsure.

FWIW ntp is for 'network time protocol' & postfix is related to mail - I'm unclear it if it is normal or required on OS X, I believe it handles mail on the local system e.g. when cron or other *nix tools has to send errors via mail.

The OS will fail to startup when essential files are missing or damaged - have you altered anything that you shouldn't have e.g. altered permissions, edited system files, deleted files you are not sure about?

If you have done any of the above then I suggest you restore from a backup if you have one, otherwise make a backup and reinstall OS X from recovery mode (do not erase). Ask if you need help backing up to a bootable disk - it's the only way to protect the data you have on disk. Reinstalling OS X should only re-write system files, however I recommend a backup in case anything goes wrong.

You can also try booting in verbose mode, however that is complex to debug & may simply cause you to spend days researching what each message means & which ones may be normal.

There are many potential reasons for failure to boot normally and can be tough to diagnose.

Another option is to install OS X to another disk (possibly a USB external disk) to confirm your hardware is not failing or damaged, I suspect you may have simply removed the wrong things when trying to clean up so the hardware may be OK. Be sure to disconnect all third party hardware like non-Apple keyboards or mice, disks etc when testing.

Yes i moved teamviewer files to the trash a remote control app wich a service employe of my internet provider had to use to set up my home network he sugested me to delete the app after the set up,and i removed one job in terminal via a sudo cmd  it was the one from ajaxserver.com(hotspotshield)the vpn trough the sugestion of one here in the discussions, maybe that pulled the trigger on it!?  .

I tried to reinstall via internet twice but it symply shuts down the process with no message whatsoever, when i try to back up the same 60... prcent closes the process and tells no back up files on my external drive, ive installed osx from a bootable usb on my machine about 2 months ago after the upgrade.what about the logic board could there be something wrong with that  ?

How are you connecting to the internet to perform a reinstall?

Wifi can be unstable, use ethernet if possible. It is not clear what stage you get to, so I really can't offer any thing else on that.

The logic board, RAM, hard disk or any of the other hardware can cause a boot failure. In your case I have to consider that it was fine for 30 days - then you tried to clean up some files & now it fails to startup. I think that hardware rarely fails overnight but it is a slim possibility.

Try using the bootable USB installer.

You can also test the hardware via Apple hardware test…

Using Apple Hardware Test - Apple Support

However I suspect that the hardware could be OK.

I'm still not clear if you have an actual backup, if so what kind?

If you have a bootable drive can't you try using that to startup the Mac?

Boot holding 'alt' (or 'option' on some models) at startup, select the external disk &see if the Mac boots OK. If that runs you can assume the issues are part of the install disk or possibly the Mac's HD could be damaged or failing.

Disk Utility can be used to 'restore' an os to another disk. It won't work for Time Machine backups though - you need to reinstall & then select do a restore via migration or setup assistant after installation is completed.
