Q: all except purchased audio disappears in itunes

I have heard a lot about songs and playlists disappearing from itunes. I am on a 2013 macbook pro retina flash drive model, still using OSX.8.5, Logic 9.2 and itunes 11.2.2 (3) out of comfort and fear of work flow disturbance, but now I must upgrade to the latest OS in order to connect my new iphone 7 to my computer.  I am a professional musician with lots of my own compositions and field recordings. I use itunes to play them back while adding live music acoustically and with logic pro.

The only music that appeared in my new iphone 7 was my PURCHASED music. None of my other important rehearsal or performance audio files transferred from my iphone 5c via the icloud restore from a recent backup.  A bit of a red flag there.  Fortunately I have them on my computer, but I am now very wary of updating my computer.  We're talking an itunes library with hundreds of unpurchased, non commercial files that are important to lots of different clients and situations.  Any advice would be SO appreciated.  Thanks!

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

First, if you use Time Machine to automatically back up your Mac's drive every hour (to an external drive)...  Worst case, you restore from the Time Machine backup state immediately before you upgraded.  Or, you can make a bootable "clone" of your Mac's drive (to an external drive) immediately before the upgrade.  Worst case, you start up from the clone, then "clone the clone" back to your Mac's drive.  If you depend on your Mac's data for your livelihood, you probably should be doing BOTH, to two separate external drives.

If all of your music is on your computer, just set up the iPhone to Sync Music from your iTunes library.  Assuming you don't use an iCloud Music Library with the iPhone, all songs stored locally on the Mac (in its iTunes library) will sync to the iPhone.  If you need help setting this up, please post back with specific questions.

My advice is to have a good backup strategy.  Apple provides one that is part of the system.  If you can restore from a backup, or even better, two (or more) different backups, you can recover from a wide range of conceivable issues.
