Q: Time Machine/ ex hard drive issue

Hi

Before we start let me say i am not tec minded.

i have a 1TB ex hard drive connected to my mac for use with the time machine back up' it has been working spot on you about 3 years no issues at all.

For some reason yesterday i checked  that it was ok at which point i noticed it was not.

The drive does not show up anywhere it is as if it isn't there. but if i click on settings and go to Time Machine it shows there but will not let me do anything with it. if i unplug and plug back in it beeps but is still the same.

does anyone know what is up, do you think the drive is dead?  i have used another drive and this is working fine.

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013), OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), Time Machine

    Hi Shakeyblade,

I would recommend reformatting the drive or at least look at preparing the drive in the disk utilities. Once completed re run Time machine and you should be good to go.

GO>Utilities>Disk Utility>   Click on the drive to run first aid >First Aid

If the repair option in disk utilities comes up with a fault maybe you should consider a new external HDD.

    Regards,
