Upgrading old imac

first time poster. please help - I am having trouble using itunes with my new iphone and I'm guessing its because my software is old and so can't use the newest itunes. However there are no software updates for me. Can I and if so, howdo I update my computer please? (without losing all my stuff)

You will need to install more RAM into your iMac model.

4 GBs of RAM won't cut it for performance on OS X 10.11.6 El Capitán.

Your year and model iMac can take a total of 8 GBs of RAM.

Install the full 8 GBs of RAM.

Correct and reliable Mac RAM can ONLY be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory (crucial.com) or OWC (macsales.com).
