Q: Deleting files from iMac after upload to iCloud

I uploaded a large video file from my iMac to iCloud and checked to be sure upload was successful. I then deleted the file from iMac and it vanished from iCloud (when I checked the next day). What did I do wrong?

OBS iMac (20-inch Early 2008), OS 10.11.2

Do you use Time Machine to back up your system drive?

If so, before you removed it from iCloud Drive, it would have been stored in the following local folder.

So, are you indicating that you copied a large file to iCloud Drive in your Finder? And when you could see it in iCloud.com, you saw it by clicking on iCloud Drive? And where, exactly, did you delete it from on your Mac? Did you delete it from iCloud Drive in the Finder on your Mac?

If everything that you are referring to is regarding iCloud Drive, then like any other iCloud function, if you delete in one place, it gets deleted everywhere. Contacts, Notes, Calendars do the same thing. iCloud Drive is a specific "drive" where you can store various types of files, photos, etc. You put them there to share with your other devices using iCloud Drive. So, if you are working on, say, a scholarly paper, and you start it at work (where you are signed into iCloud with your own iCloud ID), and you save it to iCloud Drive. It is then available to you to open at home on another device or computer that is also signed into that iCloud account. Click on iCloud Drive, click on the document, update it, save it, it's ready to go tomorrow when you get back to the office.

So, if you delete it from iCloud Drive, then it is gone.

So, when you say your Mac has no corresponding folders on it, were you looking for those folders in iCloud Drive on the Mac?

Is that what you are referring to?

If you upload it on iCloud.com, you can delete the video from your Mac. But if you put it in a folder that syncs to iCloud and delete it afterwards, it is also deleted from iCloud.

Sorry, but not sure what you are referring to here. The only way to upload a file to iCloud is via iCloud Drive, or iCloud Photo Library. And in neither case can you then delete the item from your Mac. It will delete it from iCloud. In other words, there is no way to get it to iCloud without putting it into a "folder" (actually a service - iCloud Drive or iCloud Photo Library) that syncs to iCloud. That is the only mechanism for getting things into iCloud.

Before deleting it from the Mac, did you also happen to check if the data was successfully uploaded?  Check icloud.com via a browser and see if the video file is there or not.

Just to clarify. The only way to get things to iCloud is by using an iCloud service to get them there. You can use iCloud Drive, or iCloud Photo Library. And if you use iCloud Drive or iCloud Photo Library, whatever you are putting into those "places" on your Mac, are mirrored in iCloud. And anything that you do with those files on your Mac  will also be mirrored in iCloud. If you delete them, then they will be gone on the Mac and in iCloud, unless you manually moved the folder or document in question to a separate folder outside of iCloud Drive.

This morning it vanished. Before deleting file from my Mac, I played it from iCloud to be sure file uploaded successfully and wasn't corrupted.

You can check to see if it can be restored to iCloud Drive by going to iCloud.com on your Mac. Log in, then select Settings. At the bottom of the Settings Screen, you will see an Advanced section. Click on Restore Files. That should then show you a screen that looks similar to this:

You can see how many days you have left to select a file to be restored. And you can click on the box next to the file you want to restore to do the restore:

You can click Restore or Delete on any of the documents in this folder. If you click Restore and then Done, it will replace the file to your iCloud Drive, and the file will be reflected as soon as each of the iCloud Drives on each of the devices receives it from iCloud in the sky.
