Q: Mac 466htz  2001

I have been trying to reinstall 9.1 from CD on my 466. I get the message "this computer is unable to load 9.1". I have checked the spec, and this computer should load 9.1 os. I see I have to much RAM for Virtual memory to run, and wondered because OS 9.1 expects me to give at least 65mbs to VM wether this may prevent it installing? It was only an idea, and also I have removed all anti - virus software. I really need OS 9 to 9.1 as hypercard seems to dislike later OSystems.

I assume that you have a Power Mac G4 running at 466MHz, if so then yes that latest version it can install is 9.1 or 10.0.3. In fact that mac came with 9.1 pre-installed.

Is the CD specifically for your mac, if the CD/DVD is grey and the retail version (which will have a graphic on the disc) then these are designed for specific macs' there will be something printed on the label that says which mac it is for.

Ram should not be an issue as that mac came with 128mb and 9 only needs 32mb and yes it needs at least 64mb of virtual ram.

The CD is not grey, but has the golden 9 on it, and says it is version 9.1. Could it be that the version I have is a slightly earlier version than the mac I have. I mean the version is 2000 while the mac I have is 2001? All the same thank you for taking time to answer my question. I may take out the new memory I installed and replace the old memory so as I can turn on the VM.

That will be the full retail version of 9.0 not 9.1, it's not the disc that came with your mac. Your mac needs at least 9.1 to work. Version 9.1 came out in Oct '99 and 9.1 came out in Jan '01.

actually 9.0, 9.1 & 9.2 retail discs all had a big golden 9 on them. if you version is 9.1 then that's the version that came with your mac, it should install if all the other requirements are met.

you mac should run the other versions of 9 too, both 9.2.1 & 9.2.2.

If this is a Power Mac G4 at 466 MHz, this is the only I could fine with those original specs

    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powermac_g4/specs/powermac_g4_466.html

Note what it says for Pre-Installed MacOS.  it says 9.1.  That's the version of your retail Mac OS installation disc, but if you don't have the original grey disc that came with the Mac, you may need a version of the retail disc that is later than the pre-installed version, which would be the one for 9.2.1.  A retail disc that has 9.1 may not have all the software (such as video and other hardware drivers) needed for Mac that originally came with 9.1, because the retail disc may have shipped before the Mac.

If the above link is for your Power Mac G4 model, you won't be able to run a version of Mac OS before 9.1.  And you may need the original grey disc to re-install 9.1, if the retail 9.1 disc does not work.

I have a tip for re-installing the last version of Mac OS 9 (9.2.2), but that won't help if you need precisely 9.1.
