Q: Late 2012 Imac 27 running slow after Sierra

Hi.

I've never used this forum, so hope I am approaching this with the proper etiquette.

My 27" 2012 thin bezel Imac has been slow since installing Sierra. In particular, Photos app takes forever to load up. I need advice on getting normal speed back.

Below is the Etrecheck.. Any help is appreciated!

My iMac is a bit older than yours (late 2009) but I had a very similar problem.  After installing El Capitan, it immediately became so slow it was pretty much unusable - constantly beachballing.  I posted here and the consensus was that my Hard Drive was failing.  I was somewhat skeptical, thinking that an OS update shouldn’t cause the hard drive to fail (it was working OK before), but since that was the only recommendation, I eventually bit the bullet and installed an SSD.  Lo and behold, it made no difference.  A few weeks ago, I was helping a friend do some upgrades on his (non-apple) laptop so he gave me his old RAM, which other than being larger and a little faster, was the same kind my Mac used.  My iMac originally had 4GB, and I later added 8GB for a total of 12.  It used 1067 MHz SoDIMMs and Apple said it supported a max of 16GB (4 x 4 GB).  My friend had 2 1333 MHz 8GB SoDIMMs, so I put those in just to see if they’d work.  Problem solved.  I’ve been running the 2 8GB SoDIMMS at 1333 MHz for about a month now with much less beachballing.

Maybe my old RAM was bad, or maybe the older iMacs need more memory to run the newer OS versions, I don’t know.  But it looks like you have the original amount of RAM still in the machine (8GB).  With memory prices dropping, it may be worth it to add some RAM, and that may fix the problem.

Thanks. I did. Also the version I had wasn't compatible with the new os. I originally got it as a dupe finder. It did a pretty decent job, but my pic files were too crazed for it to work perfectly.

I have two 8gb sticks on the way! Brings it to 24gb, or triple the stock 8gb. About $70 on Amazon now. I could go 32gb, but the price would double, for not using the 8 already on board.

    Thanks!
