I have a large number of photos on my MacBook pro. How do I move them to iCloud?

I have a large number of photos on my MacBook Pro. I want to move them to iCloud so that I can see them on my iPad and on my iPhone. So far, nothing I've tried seems to work. Suggestions?

Just what did you try?

Are the photos in your Photos library?

If not where are they?

If the photos are in the application Photos, go Photos/Preferences/iCloud and set up syncing there. Then go to System Preferences/iCloud and make sure you are signed in. Then check the box to sync Photos.
