See If you see the Connect to iTunes screen on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support. Hopefully you would have a recent backup with either iTunes or iCloud so that you don't lose data by restoring.

That is somewhat unfortunate. 😟
Perhaps it was backing up to iCloud without her being aware of it. Alternatively had she ever synced with iTunes to add content? Again a backup would have been taken which she might not have noticed.
