Why does my iMac refuse to go to sleep?

iMac 3.06 OS 10.11.1 suddenly refuses to sleep? Selecting the sleep mode closes the screen, but it immediately re-opens.

Try resetting the SMC http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
