By upgrading the OS. Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, click here, and download El Capitan from the Mac App Store.

If you have access to Mavericks or Yosemite, you can upgrade to those versions instead. Note that Safari 10 won’t run in Mavericks.

If you do not want to go through all of the hassles, right now, to upgrade your Mac's OS, you can just simply switch toa different web browser, such as Mozilla Firefox?

Download, instal and use the ESR (Extended Security Release version 45.x.x) of Mozilla Firefox for OS X 10.6.8-10.8.5

    https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/faq/

This web browser is totally secure for OS X Mountain Lion and it will be regularly updated for security until sometime in April 2017. Ignore all of the info about enterprise and education.

    Good Luck!

I am using Waterfox 49.0.2.1 which is an exact clone (all my settings are the same as FF) of the current Firefox release for Mac. Initially after installing WF 49.0.2.1, I got a message that it can only run on 10.9+above. After contacting the WF creator Alex Kontos, he somehow was able to fix this version so it is now compatible with 10.8.5. Here is the link to get WF 49.0.2.1:

    https://storage-waterfox.netdna-ssl.com/releases/osx64/installer/Waterfox%2049.0 .2.1%20Setup.dmg

Here is the WF forum where this discussion took place:

Just my experience, hope this helps, Ken.

That is AWESOME to learn as I was using Waterfox, but its developer wasn't responding to his blog about whether or not Waterfox was going to continue supporting OS X 10.6-10.8 or not!

So, I switched to using the Firefox ESR web browser.

Firefox ESR web browser, now vers. 45.4,  is perfectly secure as Mozilla is ONLY releasing security updates for it (the most important type of web browser updates) with no more web browser function feature updates which I reallly could give a flip about, anyways.

I have been running OS X 10.8.5 Mountain Lion since this past January 2016, so it is good to know that Waterfox will still be supported for 10.8.5.

Thanks for the info and links to the Waterfox update.

You are welcome. It seems that upon every major WF update (eg: version 48xxx to 49xxx), the support issue for 10.8.5 comes up, but Alex Kontos, the creator of WF, seems always to be willing to try a fix, so far he has been successful. I have no plans to update to El Capitan because Mountain Lion is the most compatible OS for the specs on my iMac, just seems to fly with no problems. Ken.

I am in a similar situation

I use a lot of older software that I can't afford to update any longer and OS X Mountain Lion seems to be almost rock solid and as stable as OS X Snow Leopard was/is.

Some of my older software works on OS X 10.9.5 Mavericks, but has had a tendency to crash more often on Mavericks.

Most of my older software will NOT run or run well, at all, on much newer OS X systems.

I am not experiecing these software crashing issues nearly as often on Mountain Lion.

I have El Capitán on my iMac, just for more recent versions of iTunes and to future support my newer iDevices.

I haven't, actually, work with and use OS X 10.11.6 El Cap.

Thanks for the reply. I think Mountain Lion is great, but some of the web sites I visit require newer versions of certain software that I can only get by upgrading. Since my question I have downloaded El Capitan with no problems.
