Q: Synch photos: Copy Photos From field does not include Photos app

Recently upgraded to 10.12 on Macbook Air and 10.0.2 on iPhone SE.  The iPhoto app was converted to the Photo app and all my photos are there.  I'm able to synch my photos to the new Photo app fine.  However, Synching my iPhone with Itunes fails saying that it cannot find the iPhoto library and the synch fails without synching music or photos. As I have now switched to the Photo app I don't want to bring up the old iPhoto app.  I want to synch with the new Photo app which has all my pictures in it.

While synching my iPhone SE in Itunes I go to the photos page and click on Synch Photos check box. On this page the "Copy photos from:" field on that page only shows the Pictures folder and does not list the Photo or iPhoto app as a source for photos to be synched. Is there a way to get iTunes to synch from the Photo app?

So two symptoms:

1. error box pops up when attaching iPhone SE with cable to MacBook Air saying that iPhoto library cannot be found and synch failing in the middle.

2. Photo app not listed in the "Copy photos from:" field of the Synch Photos page in iTunes while synching iPhone SE.

Thanks for any help on this problem.

MacBook Air, macOS Sierra (10.12), iPhone SE 10.0.2

    Hello jitterbugy,

I see that when you sync your iPhone in iTunes, it fails saying that it cannot find the iPhoto library, and you want to have iTunes sync from the Photos app. I completely understand. I want you to be able to sync photos in iTunes from your MacBook to your iPhone. I have something for you to try.

I would suggest using the steps in article Keep your photos safely stored and up to date on all your devices, specifically, this section:

Sync your photos manually with iTunes

You can set up iTunes to sync photos to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from the Photos app, or from a folder on your computer. Each time that you sync your iOS device with iTunes, the photos and videos on your iOS device will update to match the albums on your computer. If you have photos on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch that aren't on your computer, follow these steps to import them.

    1. Make sure that you have the latest version of iTunes.
    2. Open iTunes on your computer.
    3. Use the included USB cable to connect your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your computer.
    4. Click on the device icon in iTunes.
    5. Click Photos in the sidebar.
    6. Click the box next to "Sync Photos." If instead you see "iCloud Photos is On," all your photos and videos are already on all of your devices that use iCloud Photo Library. You don't need to sync them through iTunes.
    7. In the drop-down menu, choose the app or folder that you want to sync from.
    8. Choose to sync all photos or selected albums.
    9. Select "Include videos" to sync the videos from your app or folder too.
    10. Click Apply.

You must import Slo-Mo and Time-Lapse videos through the Photos app or Image Capture in OS X Yosemite or later for their effect to be synced via iTunes. You can also sync Slo-Mo and Time-Lapse videos when you use iCloud Photo Library.

If you're syncing from Photos, only your System Photo Library is available in iTunes.

Let us know if this helps.

    Cheers!

Thanks for your reply chris_g1.  I had seen this article and did follow it carefully.  However, as I mentioned in my original post the "Copy photos from:" field does not have the Photos app selection available in it in my case. Because of this I can only choose the pictures folder or some other folder by browsing in the Finder.  While I can see the Photo library in the finder I cannot select it directly.  Apparently you must have the Photo app selected to pull photos from the main Photos library.

My best guess is that there is something wrong in the way the migration happened from iPhoto to the new Photos app and that has messed up the itunes Sync Photos page.  I'm looking to find out how to correct this situation so I can following the instructions in the article you cited.
