Mail saves countless drafts in inbox

I have read all the topics concerning this issue, but none answer my question. I have Mailbox Preferences set to save drafts in the Drafts folder on my Mac and not on the server for all my accounts. Everytime I compose a message it saves several copies in my inbox, and his is so frustrating, when it is saving several copies a minute. When I search my inbox for an email all these drafts come up. This has resulted in me deleting the wring email, losing attachments etc... I am soooo tired of Mac Mail... it has gotten so bad. I used to use Mailbox but that is no longer with us. Mail used to be great, as did most things Apple, seems those days are gone with the continual rush to update, update, update, before anything works properly in the first place. Sorry for the rant but I am a long time Mac user/lover and the last couple of years with software, airdrop and iPhone battery and other issues, have me feeling very jaded about it.

Thank you.

I am not using Gmail and this issue is suddenly happening on my iMac 27" using current OS. Literally with having changed NOTHING, in the last three days I am seeing multiple successive and incremental drafts saved, it's ridiculous.

I have now gone to preferences and changed the iMap link to save drafts locally and will see if that resolves the issue.

No one person seems to have a solution for this that doesn't mention Gmail, hmmmm.

thanks
