older iMac as a 2nd monitor

I have a 2009 early year iMac. I am thinking of purchasing a new 27 inch iMac and wondered if I could use my old iMac as a 2nd monitor? If so, how do I connect it? Please explain how the operating system on the old monitor doesn't interfere with the new
