Mouse problems with macOS sierra

Hello,

since I've updated my iMac (2010) to macOS sierra, my Steelseries Sensei mouse is no longer working as it should. The general functions are fine (left + right button, and scrolling also) but all the extra functioning keys are not working - even worst, when I press one of the four extrabuttons for a few times in a row, my iMac completely freezes and won't work until I make a hard-reset.

I've already tried several things: updated the Steelseries Engine software, completely uninstalled and re-installed it, I also got it changed to a new model because they thought the mouse is broken, made a PRAM and SMC reset, but nothing helped yet.

I also tried to assign other functions (my usual functions have been macros like switching to previous/next page) that I didn't have to create by myself, like multimedia functions, but also without success.

Maybe somebody else has the same problem or a solution how I could fix that. Apple doesn't seem to officially know about that problem, so I guess it's not a general thing.

Would be happy to use my mouse again as it was meant to be used...

Thank in advance for helping me,

regards,

Daniel

Hi there jhunterd!

Thanks for bringing your question about your Steelseries Sensei mouse to the Apple Support Communities. Being able to use the mouse you prefer makes a huge difference to productivity, so I totally understand wanting to get this sorted out quickly. It's my pleasure to help out.

It looks like you've done a lot of good troubleshooting so far. This article is supplied by the Steelseries company and provides some additional steps you may not have taken yet:

My mouse side buttons are not working, what can I do?

My other suggestion would be to make a new user account and test the mouse there, since you've tried a lot of other things. This will at least tell us if the issue is system wide or user specific.

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac
It may be that they haven't released a driver to make the extra mouse functions friendly with macOS Sierra.
Take care.

Hi irina_w,

thank you very much for helping!

I've already found the article from the Steelseries website but it's not really helpful.

I also just tried to follow your recommendation and tried it with a new user account - unfortunately it makes no difference there.

Interestingly Steelseries seems to updated the Steelseries 3 Engine to a new version. The problem is still existing, but not completely the same as before: I still can't use my own macros for the extra keys, but I can use pre-made functions.

Only problem with that is, Steelseries offers a variety of extra functions in it's software, but nothing like "switch tabs"/"previous-next step" or something like that. So I just can create macros.

So for me it now looks like if there is a problem with corresponding to the recorded macros. If you install the software from Steelseries, you have to add it to preferences > security > privacy > accessability and I checked it - it still is added there...

Do you maybe have any other suggestions?

thx!

Hi jhunterd,

I'm using a 2015 Sensei raw on MacOS Sierra. I have the same problem. Button 4567 are not working. When pressing these buttons, system freezes.

I googled this issue. Seems Razer/Logitech mice also have this problem. Razer's going to fix this in the next release razer driver. Hope Steelseries can realize this and get it fixed soon.

Good news: SteelSeries realized the bugs and they will fix this issue in next driver release.

"Mac OS Sierra users NOTE: We are still working to resolve an issue introduced in the latest MacOS that causes macros to no longer work properly. We will release an update once we have resolved the issue. Thank you for your patience. "
