Q: Local Keychain is locked

I’ve always been a little confused about Keychain Access.  I’m helping a lady who has just upgraded her MacBook Air to Sierra and she has been seeing pop ups about items needing to “use the Local items keychain”.  She sees in Keychain Access that her Login keychain is unlocked, however, her Local keychain is locked, so the pop ups make sense.

She swears that she has not changed her password so I’m wondering how the Login Keychain could be unlocked and her Local keychain be locked.  When she clicks the “Allow” button another window pops up asking for her old password and new password, so that stumps her (and me) since she says she has always had only the one password.  I don’t know why when she logs in that the Local keychain remains locked while the Login keychain is unlocking.

Could the Local keychain have been corrupted after the upgrade?

How do I get her out of this and fix it so she doesn’t get these pop ups?

    Here's something else to consider.

She had OS X 10.8.5 Mountain Lion on her Air before upgrading to Sierra.  Mountain Lion's Keychain Access did not have a Local keychain, right?  So, after she upgraded to Sierra, which added the Local keychain, she started seeing these pop ups and they were asking her to enter her password.  Entering her password is not satisfying the popup.

So I'm wondering, why did the new Local keychain not like her password after the upgrade?  And is that a clue as to what her problem is?

    Hello !

If keychain is prompting to enter password multiple times , & pop - up is not going away when safari is opened .

In user library ( go to go folder & type ~/Library )  > keychains > remove first folder ( alfa numeric folder ) to trash . Restart & empty the trash , go to internet accounts & once again configure web mail account , I cloud mail account by entering four digit I cloud verification code .

Open air port utility via spotlight > enter your base station password .

    Thanks !

I assume that when I delete that folder all of the passwords that were in her Local keychain will be deleted, so there might be a lot more passwords that she will have to put in than those you mentioned.  That's what I was hoping to avoid since she may not have some of those passwords.  But I guess if she doesn't know the admin password to unlock those pop ups then there's no other option, correct?

Do you have any idea what could have caused this problem?  Her Login keychain works fine, and I thought the Login and Local keychain kind of worked in tandem with the same admin password.  So why does one work and the other doesn't?

May , be if one is not having admin password it can be set by going to recovery mode : shut down system & press  command + R + power key simultaneously don't release first two keys until a bar loads , go to utilities from to menu bar , open terminal type resetpassword , click on enter , close terminal , restart the system .

Also , admin password & key chain password are same .

And , the person can change the admin password with the help of article .

macOS Sierra: Reset a login password

if one is having four digit I cloud verification code that is absolutely correct & if key chain is corrupted the person can delete the alfa numeric folder can create new fresh keychain folder .and enable all accounts .

And, it is always recommended to write down all your passwords in the diary .

The reason for corruption of keychain access is you open key chain access via spot light , open the corner left lock by entering admin password , in keychains you will see login keychain and you close the login key chain lock the issue might be there in keychains or if you enter four digit verification code incorrectly for multiple times ,

To avoid this , open key chain access via spotlight , choose preferences ( you can press command + comma ) click the general tab , select show keychain status in menu bar , a padlock icon appears in the menu bar itself .

To , lock the scree manually click the padlock icon & choose lock screen .

    Thanks for the info, tygb.

Yeah, she knows her user account password.  As a matter of fact I had her change her password using the "Change Password" in System Preferences > Users & Groups, log out and then log back in with the new password.  I thought that might trigger the Local keychain to unlock, but sadly, it didn't.

So I guess we can assume that the database in that folder you mentioned is corrupt...I guess.  I guess my only option is to delete it and then she will have to enter again all her passwords.  Hope she has them written down somewhere.

I'll be seeing her this afternoon so I can do this for her.  I'll let you know how it goes.

Please make sure before deleting alfa numeric folder you must have correct four digit I cloud verification code in your records .

I don't think she has ever used iCloud Keychain so she shouldn't have a 4 digit security code.  I'll ask her, though.

You're not referring to the code for 2-Step verification are you?

I don't think she is using 2-Step Verification, or 2-Factor Authentication, so she shouldn't be getting any four digit code.

I am talking about I cloud four digit verification code only , not two step verification code or two factor authentication .

Your friend must have this code , as when it is enabled an sms comes on registered mobile , you have to enter six digit number  that comes in the mobile in the empty field .

But this verification code is fixed or always constant  for the user , also we can change the verification code if the person don't remember it .

That's the thing. She doesn't use iCloud Keychain so I'm sure she never got a 4 digit code.

Ok, I deleted the folder you mentioned and she's back in business.

Before doing that I thought I would turn ON iCloud Keychain on her Air and see if that would make things work.  When I did she got a 6 digit code on her iPhone and we entered that but it wouldn't accept it saying that there was an iCloud communication error.  That kind of confirmed with me that something in that folder you mentioned was corrupt.  That's when I deleted it, and restarted the Air.

No more pop ups wanting access to Local keychain!  She had to enter passwords but thankfully she did have a good record of her passwords.

Thanks for all the help, tygb!   I very much appreciate it.

What if you can't find any folders? I'm not seeing or finding the alfa folder in the key access. i'm having the exact same problem after i was downloading sierra and had to reboot/restart it during the download because it froze. nothing i do works, though somehow i managed to change my login in password, but the keys don't take any of the passwords and i know all of the possible ones i'd have made!, HELP

Yes please! because no matter what i do it keeps popping up. Starting to hate this update because even my iphone doesn't work the same since. And there isn't an apple store near me that i can take it too. Not to mention i have to do my online classes and hitting cancel every ten mins for 15 sec doesn't help with time
