I'm pretty sure the problem is with the computer, not OS X. Most likely you upgraded a dysfunctional system which is now worse. You also may be using some software that is incompatible. I would start with this:

    Fix Sierra Installation

Try each of these in order. Test to see if the computer is working properly:

    1. Reset the PRAM
    2. Reset the System Management Controller (SMC)
    3. Start the computer in Safe Mode, then restart normally. This is slower than a standard startup.
    4. Repair the disk by booting the from the Recovery HD. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command and R keys until the Utility Menu appears. Choose Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the indented (usually, Macintosh HD) volume entry from the side list.  Click on the First Aid button in the toolbar. Wait for the Done button to appear. Quit Disk Utility and return to the Utility Menu. Restart the computer from the Apple Menu.
    5. Reinstall OS X by booting from the Recovery HD using the Command and R keys. When the Utility Menu appears select Reinstall OS X then click on the Continue button.A

Use Activity Monitor to Kill Runaway Processes

Use Activity Monitor on your Mac

Runaway applications can shorten battery runtime, affect performance, and increase heat and fan activity.

It shouldn't affect your data. But that isn't anything I can guarantee, so it can't hurt to backup your files first.

Under no circumstances should you ever have to say, "... i have important programs and information on my mac, so if i do this my information will be deleted or how it works?" Always have at least one current backup - preferably more than one.) If your files are important and you do not have a backup strategy, then those files are not worth much for you to protect them.

the best option is to wait the fans cool down itself.  If the fans are still warm after a long time, go to Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor > CPU, to check which applications or process are hogging up the processor, dis-enable them if possible.
