Q: I am getting the following message when I try to put a folder in the trash. Any suggestions?

This is what comes up:

The operation can’t be completed because one or more required items can’t be found.

(Error code -43)

Any suggestions?

I am running OS 10.11.6 on a late 2015 iMac

iMac with Retina 5K display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

I ran Disk Utility to check the disk and everything was fine, so I rebooted and once I was up again I could put the items in the trash as usual and everything worked. So I guess I answered my own question, although I remain curious as to what happened.

Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on solving Trash issues. You can also try using Trash It! 5.1 to fix the problem. Or you can try this:

Open the Terminal in the Utilities folder and paste the following at the prompt:

        sudo rm -Rf ~/.Trash

Press RETURN. Enter your admin password when prompted. It will not echo to the screen. Press RETURN again.

(Should anyone tell you this is dangerous or unnecessary, please ignore the comment.)

If the above fails you can check this: My Mac Won't Empty the Trash | Easy PC Tutorials.

After working through the above you should restart the computer before trying to delete a file. Remember that the error message can also mean there is a problem with the file you are attempting to delete.
