iCloud IMAP account suddenly stops working on Mail application

I have used the standard Apple "Mail" application for years. I am running Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.8. I have not made any changes to the email settings in years. Today, when I turned on my Macbook and opened Mail, I received a pop up message stating:

"The icloud.com IMAP server "imap.mail.me.com" rejected the password for user UserName1. Enter your password again or cancel."

Reentering my password did nothing and the account was unable to be brought online.

The icloud email account is working fine on my iphone and ipad and in any internet browser.

The settings I had for the icloud email address in Mail on the macbook are as follows (no, my password is not "password"):

Email Address: sample_alias_email@icloud.com

Incoming Mail Server: imap.mail.me.com

User Name: UserName1

Password: password

Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.mail.me.com

User default ports

Use SSL

Authentication: Password

User Name: UserName1

Password: password

I found the following Apple help article that provided set up instructions for icloud mail on Snow Leopard:

iCloud: Configuring Mail with Mac OS X v10.6 or iOS 4 - Apple Support

This provides different settings than what I had in Mail, so, even though those have worked for me since I initially entered them, I changed the settings to match the document. The new settings became:

Email Address: sample_alias_email@icloud.com

Incoming Mail Server: mail.me.com

User Name: UserName1

Password: password

Outgoing Mail Server: mail.me.com

User default ports

Use SSL

Authentication: Password

User Name: UserName1

Password: password

The same error message continued to appear. The other angle I looked at was what exactly I should be using for the Email Address and User Name fields. As noted above, my initial setup used the email "sample_alias_email@icloud.com," which is an alias for my icloud account. I also have the "true" icloud account, "UserName1@icloud.com" and "UserName1@me.com." The "UserName1" portion of the address is what had been in the User Name fields in Mail.

I tried "UserName1" and "sample_alias_email" in the User Name fields in every conceivable combination. Nothing changed. I tried adding a new account and using "sample_alias_email@icloud.com," "UserName1@icloud.com" and "UserName1@me.com" as the email address. With the first two options, the @icloud.com addresses, the following message appeared when I filled in the 3 fields (Full Name, Email Address, Password) and clicked Continue:

The icloud.com IMAP server “Automatically added for iOS & OS X Mail” is not responding. Try checking the network connection, and that the server name is correct. Otherwise, the server might be temporarily unavailable. If you continue, you might not be able to receive messages.

It did not matter what I entered for a password with those two email addresses; I entered the actual password, random characters, nothing, the message was always the same. It appears that because the server is unavailable (supposedly), it's not even able to check the password.

The "UserName1@me.com" address gave me a different message:

Logging in to the MobileMe IMAP server “mail.me.com” failed. Make sure the user name and password you entered are correct, then click Continue. If the information isn’t correct, you cannot receive messages.

The text temporarily displayed immediately after clicking Continue shows that it is trying to verify my password, but it fails even though the password is correct.

I can successfully sign into icloud through a web browser with "UserName1@icloud.com" and "UserName1@me.com," but not with the alias address, which makes sense.

So, it appears something changed overnight, but I don't know what. I can send and receive email with the icloud account set up on my iphone and ipad, so it makes me think something changed with the server that did not affect the set up on those devices but did on my old version of OS X and Mail. It seems impossible that my account could have been hacked and my password changed, as everything is still working on the iphone and ipad with my password.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Matt

You need to enable 2 Factor Authentication on your Apple ID and create an app specific password to use. Apple made a change that requires 3rd party applications accessing iCloud to have an app specific password. If 2 Factor Authentication isn't an option for your Apple ID, use 2 step Verification.

It has been a couple of years, but I used 2 Step Verification with Snow Leopard Mail and using an app specific password always worked for me. Some other things to check.

Mail not sending or receiving messages after updating OS X

Jul 27, 2017 7:26 PM in response to mpb2000

I've been having the exact same issues as mpb2000, even stranger every time I log into this forum I have a different log in name. Got to love technology. Before leaving for the entire month of June I received an email from Apple telling me that on June 15th a new log in/password/verification system was going to be implemented. Not wanting to lose my email while I was out of the country I went to the Genius Bar at my local Apple store to ask them what this was about because I was planning to use my iTouch v. 6.1.6 to read my .mac emails. They had no clue as to what I was talking about. During the entire month of June I was able to send and receive .mac email. When I got home on July 3rd my .mac email no longer worked with my .mac application running on 10.6.8. I use 10.6.8 because many of my expensive applications (e.g. Final Cut) will not work on anything higher. I have tried EVERYTHING suggested in these forums and NOTHING works. As a work around I have set up my iCloud mail account to forward all of my .mac mail to my Verizon email account. Oh, one last thing, my .mac email can send emails on 10.6.8 but it will not receive any emails. I may go to the post office and buy a S#*$ load of stamps and envelopes.

"Apple Token" is not an option. Only Password, MD5 Challenge-Response, Kerberos Version 5, NTLM. Any other ideas?

I noticed on the Apple "System Status" page that there was an hour the day I started having this problem that said 0.3% of users were unable to send or receive icloud email. Unfortunately, nothing has changed for me, and the problem remains.

I deleted everything related to that email address in Keychain. I ran Keychain First Aid verification, which completed with no problems found. No change. The settings I had when things worked produce the same error, and all other combinations of user names, server names, etc. result in the same errors I initially indicated.

For what it's worth, here is a screenshot I took of the Apple System Status page of the error that appears to coincide with my problem, although I first noticed the issue the morning of October 18, not from 4-5 pm, and obviously, the problem remains.

I have, and I have tried adding it with every combination of options as described above. I spoke with Apple Support and had them remotely connect to my mac. They were unable to resolve the issue. Finally, I was told to update to Lion because Snow Leopard is unsupported. I suspect the "iCloud Service" issue as reported on the Apple System Status page on October 18 was caused by some server side change that has caused a problem on Snow Leopard that Apple does not recognize or does not care about because it is an unsupported OS. Updating to Lion will probably resolve the issue, and I have been planning on doing that anyway, but I wanted to fix the issue on Snow Leopard so I could back up my system in a "good" state before installing Lion.

There have been a lot of posts lately about difficulties with iCloud e-mail. It may be that Apple needs to adjust something there.

Apple support's advice to update to Lion because Snow Leopard is unsupported makes no sense because Lion isn't supported either. Based on my experience and personal opinion, you might want to try installing Lion in a new partition to test drive. Again, personal opinion, Snow Leopard is a far better OS than Lion. If you do decide to upgrade:

Check to make sure your applications are compatible. PowerPC applications are no longer supported after 10.6.

Also check to make sure there is a compatible driver for your printer.

Do a backup before installing, preferable 2 backups on 2 different drives.
