carplay maps navigation autostarts

Whenever I plug my iPhone and fire up the carplay interface at the maps app, it just auto-starts navigation either to my home location or sometimes to the last browsed place. Is this a bug or a bug dressed as a feature?

if a feature, how can I turn it off?

iPhone 7, iOS 10.0.3

HI benjaesq,

I understand that when using CarPlay, the navigation will automatically begin to navigate to some locations when opened. I know that it's important to be able to navigate to where you're headed, so I'm happy to help.

While CarPlay does show suggested locations based on information on your iPhone, it should not begin to automatically navigate there. You can find out more about how this works here:

Maps - iPhone

To troubleshoot this issue, let's check out the troubleshooting listed below. Make sure to go through each step in order:

Set up CarPlay with your iPhone - Apple Support

Get help

If CarPlay doesn't work like you expect, here’s what you can check. After each step, try using CarPlay again.

  1. Make sure that Siri is turned on.
  2. Restart your iPhone and your car. Depending on your car, you might see the CarPlay Home screen when you turn it on. If you don't, look for the CarPlay logo on your car’s display.
  3. If possible, connect your iPhone to a different USB port in your car.
  4. Try a different Lightning to USB cable. Make sure that the cable is certified.
  5. Update to the latest version of iOS.
  6. Check your car’s manual for help. You might need to install firmware updates for your stereo.

There you have it; Internet public forums (or, fora, should you prefer): You have carefully noted the dozens of incorrect directions over six months at the less than 50% accuracy of Apple Maps; all of these are dutifully sent to Apple; your high-end sports car will not run CarPlay correctly and neither Apple nor the car manufacturer take responsibility; and you simply describe the problem online. Was passiert? A moronic ad hominem response. Ah, vox populi.

I have an identical problem (new Honda Clarity with CarPlay): whenever I turn on Apple Maps, it preloads a direction and a blue route. Often the destination is "home" (even if I am driving away from home), but sometimes it is a restaurant in the area. Note that I almost never used Apple Maps before the new car, so there should not be stored routes. I have used Car Play in rental cars last year, and do not recall the same problem. This is annoying because the route line is distracting (if I just want the map displayed), and the route bubble in the bottom left of the screen takes up real estate. It also results in the wrong scale being displayed. Apple Maps on the phone alone does not seem to have this issue.

(The issue of the unwanted autostart in Maps is similar to another annoyance in Car Play, that it automatically starts an audio track, either from Music or from Audible. There really should be a setting to turn off these features.)

Sorry ... Maps continues to run very poorly on CarPlay, in addition to the hyper-inaccuracy of maps, which remains and is a different issue. The steps given above are a relatively worthless reading from a basic protocol. There is communication problem between Apple CarPlay and Apple Maps: directions frequently come late, the vehicle is often placed in the wrong spot, such as a service road a quarter-mile away and I'm on the highway, instructions come to U-turn when I'm on the highway going in the proper direction, and, worst of all, instructions sometimes come too late, or even not at all, and you'll miss the highway exit. The latter just happened to me when driving to a conference in Memphis. They responsible solution, as I have emailed to Tim Cook, is to cooperate with Google and allow Google maps to work the CarPlay. ( iPhone 7 Plus, iOS 10.1.1, Verizon LTE)

Hello - I have the same general question (and agreed, CarPlay doesn't actually start the navigation, but it takes a lot of time to calculate a route to a location that I don't necessarily want to visit yet) - the point is, how do we disable the "auto-calculating route" feature?

I am really trying to like CarPlay (Ford Sync3 in the FFEP, iOS 10.2b4, iPhone 7+, AT&T) and this is one of the many little things that makes me keep going back to Sync3 (which is a surprisingly good platform). I have been focusing my time mostly with the maps experience.

I would suggest the Apple folks incorporate a few ideas from the Sync3 full screen maps view. Small details like showing the speed limit, the current road I'm on, what song is playing, etc. are some of the missing things that (currently) make Sync3 a better experience.

(I won't comment on the quality of the maps themselves; my point here is about the user experience of the system. Apple's CarPlay Maps is too sparse at the moment, with only a few POI integrations like Yelp and OpenTable; I'd like more general, basic info shown.)

No doubt. Mine keeps suggesting some bizarre web design firm whenever I'm close to home. I have never been there... yet it comes up and automatically starts navigation. I thought it was something to do with our family's shared calendar, but my wife has never heard of the place either.

It happens constantly and makes me scream obscenities about Apple - often to the chagrin of other auto-owners around me....

Good job, Apple.

Same here - it takes a while to calculate some suggestion (and boy, can it be an odd suggestion to someplace I've never been) and then after I clear the suggestion I have to re-center the map each and every time. Is this a bug in the iPhone or in the vehicle? I have a 2018 Acura MDX Tech/Advanced/Entertainment.

I think the problem was not described accurately. I doubt GUIDANCE is actually beginning, but rather some destination (my home address usually) is being "pre-loaded" at bottom left, and a route calculated in the background. The result is a very significant and unacceptable delay in being able to SEE THE FREAKING MAP which is REALLY ANNOYING. Is there a way to NOT have CarPlay pre-load a destination like that? Or is it simply a built-in function we are stuck with?

In my case, I'm on a brand new Golf Alltrack, and iOS 10.3.3 (but does the iOS or car software version really affect this? I feel doubtful). I'm not sure if this happens in my 2017 Chevy Volt since I don't drive it as much.
