Q: How to customize finder sidebar Mac OS Sierra

Upgraded to Sierra 10.12. Cannot customize finder sidebar. Followed all available help instructions, Finder/preferences/sidebar. Marked desired boxes - absolutely nothing happens. Thanks

Boot into Safe Mode, Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode, and see if the sidebar works there.  Reboot normally and check again.
