OS X Sierra wifi/internet issues

I upgraded to OS X Sierra two days ago, and I haven't been able to get wifi/internet to work for TWO days now. It connects to the network just fine, but there is virtually no internet connection. Every once in awhile a page partially loads but then stalls out. And simultaneously I'm using my OS X Yosemite laptop and getting 80mb down internet speeds on the same network.

There are numerous articles online about wi-fi problems with Sierra installs, and I've followed what most of them say, to delete existing wi-fi preferences - e.g. files at /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ http://osxdaily.com/2016/09/22/fix-wi-fi-problems-macos-sierra/

So this is a known issue, but I can't find anywhere Apple acknowledging the issue, or providing a solution. Am I missing something??

Addition: I spoke to Apple consumer care trying to find a solution by changing settings in my MacBook. No success. In the end we tried resetting the router and then it worked again.

All in all this is very confusing. A combination of booting in protected mode and then rebooting in normal mode plus resetting the router seems to do the trick for me. It is stable for two days in row now.

My 2 years-old MacBook Pro wifi just won't connect. It won't even connect to my mobile wifi hotspot. All my other devices (iPad, Android phone, an old iMac and an old Windows 8.1 laptop) are all connected to the wifi. And it's stable on all the devices except for the MacBook Pro. I have gone through the process linked osxdaily. I'm literally at my wits end. Please help me understand what is going on with Sierra 10.12.2.

I just bought 2 new MacBook Pro's in late December and I am new to Mac's but have been using computers for over 35 years (starting on Linux, PC and now OS X). I have been trying to set things up and migrate from the PC to the Mac and during copying of files or at times downloading an app all on WiFi the connection drops and then picks back up intermittently. Very frustrating. I have the modem set as per the requirements of this thread but still the problem remains. I have 2 iPad Air's (latest), 1 iPod and 2 iPhones that all connect and have no dropping issues, on the Sierra OS seems to bring this issue up as a problem. A LOT of money spent for this

Random solution I found that has worked for 5 days now; First restart in safe mode (holding down shift key). Two if you have wifi in safe mode, restart in normal mode and delete the 5 SystemConfiguration files. Three restart again and set up the new network custom location. I have now had 5 uninterrupted days of wifi connection with Sierra, my longest duration in over a month. I don't know why it works, just random things I tried in sequence. All have been mentioned before but I never did them back to back.

Same problem. Mac Mini late 2014. Wifi worked perfectly before the Sierra update. After several hours with Apple Chat & support by telephone, multiple resets in safe mode / reinstalls etc (under their guidance) I could finally reconnect to wifi (Ethernet worked perfectly all this time). However 2 days later, could no longer connect. Very, very frustrating. Definately an OS software problem. No other Apple device in our household has this problem (including an iMac we're not updating the OS on until we convinced the problem has been completely solved)

Hi From Paris,

I just changed my modem configuration from "WPA2-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES]" to "WPA2-PSK [AES]".

I restarted the modem and the macBook Air...and...so far it seems it did the job 🙂

I will check again after a long sleep period, but it looks pretty good.

Thanks for the tip 🙂

Hope it will resolve the issue for other users too...

Cheers,

David.

Hello !

Please make sure that you have entered correct DNS server settings , keep the security as WPA2 personal AES ( Advanced encryption standard ) , it also depends on correct settings if you are using air port express .

Please follow the article . make sure that no wires should be damaged , a minor cut in wires can also create internet issues .

Internet connection does not work with an IP address space of 169.254.xxx.xxx from ISP, router, or manual configuration …

Thanks !

Hold option key & click on wi fi icon that is on top menu bar & click on open wireless diagnostics .

Take cursor on top left hand side of the the top menu bar & select wireless diagnostics , select open external tool & click on network diagnostics .

Network status will be shown in the window ( a ) wi - fi ( b ) wi fi settings ( c ) network settings ( d ) ISP ( e ) internet ( f ) server , all of them must have green dots in front of them .

Select the box wifi & click on continue .

Then again , select your wireless network name shown ( having a small lock in front of it ) in the window & click on continue .

A pop - up window appears network diagnostics wants to access key ..........your wireless name will be written in your keychain , do you want to allow access to this internet ? so click on ALLOW .

In the last a report will be written inside the window - Your internet connection appears to be working correctly - click on quit .

Again take cursor on the top menu bar & select wireless diagnostics & quit wireless diagnostics .

Another method is run wireless diagnostics test : Check for Wi-Fi issues using your Mac - Apple Support

Or you can go to system preferences & open the padlock by entering your admin name & password select your network name & click on minus sign , click on advanced > remove network name , uncheck remember network name > DNS settings & no proxies must be enabled . once again configure your network some mistakes can be there while settings .

I had the same issue once , every settings was perfect still the wi fi was dropping , so called the ISP guy , the service provider modem settings were incorrect , changed the defective modem , also some road construction work was going nearby my place , as internet wires are laid underground they were damaged ( minor cuts in wires will drop the internet connection ) .

I hope so it could help you somewhat & you can ask for further assistance .

Thanks !

WiFi is just the conection to the modem. Internet is what comes out/in the modem through the WFi connection to your computer.

What is recommended often when something goes awry after updating or upgrading:

disconnect the modem from the mains, disconnect the (WiFi) router(s) from the mains;

after about 10 seconds reconnect the modem to the mains, let it start fully (may take minutes to have started everything);

then reconnect the Main router to the mains, let it start fully, then the rest if any.

None of this software garbage works. Wifi on my 2012 iMac worked flawlessly before upgrading to Sierra. Now constant, "No internet connection." Obviously a flaw in the OS and when is Apple going to issue a fix? I tried all the software fixes listed and reset the PRAM and SMC, no effect. All my other Apple devices connect so don't tell me it is my router.

OK , we assume your service provider modem is perfect , green lights are showing in front of your ISP modem , can you take out all wires once again and do a factory reset for your modem , as every modem settings are different you must have catalogue just go through it or can consult toll free number for the brand of modem. Also, you can call your service provider guy to come at your place , some issue can be from their end , it might be server issues .
