iphone screen protection recommendation

There are lots of screen protection products out there for iphones. I just broke my screen today because I thought the Gorilla glass was strong, not. Does Apple recommend a type of screen protector for 5s and 6s phones? I like the tempered glass, but some say it is a gimmick.

I also don't want the phone in a sealed box as I can't enjoy the phone then.

Apple has no policy at all about screen protectors. Using one, or not, is entirely up to each individual owner.

I don't like any of them and don't use one and have not on my iphones. I do use a case, with my iphone 7 that is a Sena leather wallet case so there is a leather flap that folds over the screen when the phone is not in use. I just sold my 2 years old iPhone 6 which had been kept in a similar case and truly looked as good as it had the day I got it. The screens are no more fragile or prone to damage than any smart phone using a structural strengthened glass screen. But prudence would recommend a case of some kind if you are concerned about dropping as the best way to break any flat sheet of glass is to drop it on its edge or corners.
