Q: how can i get Safari to do downloads that pick up where they left off?

Hi,

 

If you wouldn't mind please i need help with a question:

 

how can i get Safari to do downloads (eg. software updates, etc…) that pick up where they left off? Since i have a very slow internet connection, it always times out partway through. Yikes!

So is there perhaps some setting, or some app, that will allow this downloading that picks up where they left off?

I have an iMac running El Capitan 10.11.1.

 

I recently had to have my whole system re-installed due to accidental moving of all my files. And now,

I find i cannot use my printer until I download the software again for it. Everytime i try, i end up getting the error message:

"Can't download the software because of a network problem."

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

    Hi, where are you downloading them from, it's mostly dependent on the other end.

    None that I am aware of. Safari used to be able to do that, but that was a long time ago. Your only recourse is to find a faster or more reliable Internet connection.

     

    What is your printer's exact model designation? I might be able to find a solution that doesn't require going through Apple's automatic printer driver identification and downloading process. Sometimes that just doesn't work.

    my printer’s exact model is HP Officejet 7612 (aka 7610, has same software as 7610). It’s  called a wide-format e-all-in-one. My model # is:

    G1X85A.

    I do have Firefox browser too.

    Is there perhaps a way through Firefox?

    That is an Apple AirPrint printer. No drivers are required, meaning you don't have to download anything. To add an AirPrint-compatible printer to your Mac's printing options, please read Connect an AirPrint printer to a Wi-Fi network - Apple Support.

     

    If that doesn't work, please write back and explain where you're getting stuck.

    but alas, the whole problem i have is my super weak&spotty internet service.

        So assuming the Wi-Fi option you mention requires that, it it not a possibility for me. (Even checking emails is a very difficult process for my connection!)

     

        So i think what i need to know is if i can pause and resume Mac software updates that were started via Apple Menu’s System preferences?

        If they fail partway through the downloading/installing process, is there a way i can retrieve the partially-downloaded file and resume the download from the file?

    (If so, where do i look for such a file? I know i can do this download-resuming though the Firefox browser, but this one is through Mac.)

        If there is no way via Mac, then is there a way that i can download the  printer software i need (which is described as ‘available from Apple’), directly via Firefox, by visiting some Apple webpage? Then install it to Mac? If so, where exactly do i look for this software?

    Is this what you are referring to:

    If you are downloading updates from the Apple/menu bar, then you are downloading them via the app store app. That is the only way to get updates. There is no browser - Safari or Firefox - involved. You should be able to pause the download. Unfortunately, I have no updates showing at the moment, so I can't post a screenshot of the window.

    You do not need to download anything for your printer, because an AirPrint printer does not require any drivers to download.

     

    A Wi-Fi connection is not an Internet connection. You need only to communicate with that printer over your local wireless network. Internet is not required.

     

    Follow the instructions I posted above, and if you get stuck please tell me where.

    actually it would be that same image but with the 'system preferences…' selected. (then selecting from there the Printers&Scanners.)

     

    But okay, so i take it i am supposed to click on the App Store option?

    Please follow John Galt's instructions. I had really meant to address this part of your earlier question:

    As a general rule, all downloads - updates for apps and the OS - from Apple are downloaded from the app store. And, that is where you can pause downloads. However, for printers, you do use the Printer Pane - IF you need it; which, in this case you do not.

    Just a clarification, please?--

    would printer software have been downloaded from the app store?

    Or is using the Printer Pane a completely separate source, and therefore would not be from the app store menu?

    (and also therefore, would not have been  pause-able?)

     

    Also, when John says ,

    how do i know if i have a "local wireless network"?

    Is that something that all Mac users automatically have, or something i have to set up somehow?

     

    (All I usually do is click the Wi-fi menu icon and can select my nearby landlord's available network that is provided to all us tenants.)
