iPhone contacts blank

I added a new record to my Contacts list on my Mac. Later that evening, I noticed that it hadn't synced to my iphone. I turned Contacts off on my phone, cold start, and when I turned it back on and restore the sync setting for my contacts, I perhaps incorrectly answered the question with MERGE. Contacts are now blank but still on my Mac.

I would appreciate any suggestions.
