Q: Finder freezes in Sierra macOS

After upgrading from El Capitan to Sierra macOS, my finder freezes constantly, and after killing it, sometimes it doesn't recover, not even after reboot.

I deleted the com.apple.finder.plist file under ~/Library/Preferences and restarted but it didn't help.

Any idea how to solve this issue, since the finder is impacting the entire macOS performance, every time I need to open a new file in Xcode, save something, the system or application freezes with the rainbow spinning wheel for few minutes.

BTW: as a workaround, I find the way to open the finder after it crashes by open it from the menu with the Find option.

I look forward for your inputs on the matter

Thanks,

Arie

    Hey there, gutty1!

I see that after updating to macOS Sierra, Finder constantly freezes. Sometimes a reboot won't even make it work correctly. I can see how this would be impacting the performance of your Mac, I use Finder a lot. I want to help you try and resolve this issue.

First, I would advise starting your computer into safe mode, and then test to see if you get the same result. Safe mode (sometimes called safe boot) is a way to start up your Mac so that it performs certain checks, and prevents some software from automatically loading or opening. This is a good isolation test to see if anything third-party running in the background could be causing this issue. Please use the following article to start into safe mode: macOS Sierra: Start up in safe mode

If you still have an issue after that, I would suggest testing this in another user account. You can log in as another user to figure out if unexpected behavior is related to a specific user's settings or files. This is a good isolation test to see if the issue is related to the entire system or not. This article will help you test in a new user account: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

Let us know the results of these tests. We'll help you get through this.

    Cheers!
