Sierra is not the problem, the problem is that for a new install of win 10 you need, if a MacBookPro, a mid 2012 or newer one.
Use Windows 10 on your Mac with Boot Camp - Apple Support
You can get Win 10 by installing an earlier Windows version and updating it.

You also need to consider possible driver issues since 2011 Macs do not officially support W10.

i tried installing windows 8.1, but boot camp assistant on Sierra does not recognize any version earlier than windows 10, its like i'll have to downgrade to Capitan, but don't know how. Can anyone assist?

Please see macOS Sierra: Revert to a previous macOS version . You need to use a Time Machine backup.
