Strange lines on screen only in Time Machine

I have some strange vertical and horizontal lines when I enter in Time Machine.

I've checked for errors on the the graphic card but it's working fine.

Specs:

macOS Sierra 10.12 (16A320)

As promised, i have now received a reply from Apple with regards to this issue:-

" I received a response from our engineers to say that they are aware of this issue and that it is definitely software related. They are currently investigating and will have a fix for it soon. Please make sure you install any MacOS updates as they are released, if I hear of any other updates on the issue I will contact you."

Hopefully this will put users who have this problem minds at rest...

I have a base model Macbook pro, 13 inch, 2.0ghz, 8gb ram, 256 gb hd and I have this issue with vertical and horizontal lines appearing when entering TM. I also have an issue with my display doing a double fade-in effect when being woken up from sleep (lifting the lid or pressing spacebar after 15 mins of idle). I posted about it in another thread here: MacBook Pro's display does fade-in effect twice when waking up from sleep.

Thank goodness it's just not me!!! Been on to tech support today and have:

1. Downloaded and installed a fresh OS Sierra - no change

2. Carried out hardware check- all ok

3. Removed each ram stick one at a time and restarted iMac - no change

4. Reset the nvram - no change

5. Run iMac in safe mode - issue not present

So I'm guessing that because in safe mode it is running the basic config, this looks like a graphics driver issue.....

iMac 27" 5k. 1TB Flash drive, 24gb ram late 2015

Hopefully this helps

I have to speak to tech support again tomorrow...I wonder if there is a way to go back to 10.12?? As I didn't see this issue with that release

Can you confirm that you have these vertical lines in Time Machine as well? Would be interesting to know if these issues are connected somehow.

I am now running the latest beta 10.12.3 Beta (16D17a), and am still facing these issues in TM, but not on restart, though.

Interestingly, a similar issue occurs in some 3D games, such as Civilization VI (as mentioned earlier). As Civ VI runs flawlessly under Bootcamp on the same machine, I reckon it is a driver issue. Aspyr, the company behind the Mac port of CIV VI, is working on a patch right now. Maybe they will understand the issue, and request Apple to update their Intel HD drivers.

Just to confirm, i have today sent system log files off to support as requested. They are now sending these reports along with my screen capture to systems support.

In the meantime i have created a new partition on my iMac and have installed El Capitan on it with no issues what so ever, which i believe shows this is a driver issue with OS Sierra...

just following on from my fault finding mission!, i have just upgraded the El Capitan partition to a fresh install of Sierra 10.12.2 downloaded from the App store, and the original issues have returned...lines on the screen with Time Machine and garbled screen when restarting the iMac.

i have fed this back to support on the case i have open currently.

i will update this thread when i get a reply from systems support

> artefact sp: artifact

it's called a moir pattern

it means the dots the graphics card is sending are not aligned with the dots on the screen. i've never heard of that happening on an (ostensibly LCD of some kind) setup. perhaps if the video card is put in the wrong mode it could happen - though i thought lcd was digital. on analog monitors it happens because the dot timing is not matched with the dots of phosphor as the beam swipes the screen.

today - rendering (extrapolated graphics, fonts in X windows) is sub-pixelar, which is why LCD fonts are so clear, because there is more than one dot per dot rendered, each pixel on the screen is sure to be clear what gets a dot.

good luck

Thanks for that elaboration!

Interestingly, this issue does not occur when using a non-retina resolution, as another user pointed out earlier.

And yes, even with the latest update which has been released yesterday, nothing has changed. Probably we have to sit out another full iteration, as this issue is not considered to be extremely important.

This is ridiculous and constitutes a major defect - together with some other issues referred to on these boards. Apple is doing nothing about this despite informing me it is with "engineering". I have raised this with Apple since October 2016 and there is no resolution in sight. I have written to Apple Australia (by post as no email is available!) and demanded a full refund.
