Q: apple id isn't recognized to log into icloud

I just got a new iphone and logged into my apple id ok.  and all is working well except icloud. I've tried to log into icloud and can't. I get the error that my id or password is incorrect. It isn't. What am I doing wrong? (I am using my apple id @icloud.com)

iPhone 7 Plus, iOS 10.0.2
