Q: time machine very slow

Hello,

From El Capitan I move the MacBook Pro mi-2012 to Sierra. I do a clean install (Erase mac's main hard drive and a Sierra bootable USB key).

I do the same last week but yesterday the computer was a king of frozen (problem with safari, launchpad and most of the menu). And I realize having problem with Time Machin. Last week, no problem with the backup on Sierra (and never have problem with El Capitan). But yesterday, the backup was very very very slow, 8 hours for 300Go.

This morning, after the complet restauration with a clean install of Sierra, I start a backup with TM (I do an total erase of the external HD), 3 hours for the backup. After this one, I try a other backup and TM was stuck on "preparation for backup". I cancel the transfer.

Any idea to solve this problem ?

Thank you for your help.

By design, Time Machine works at low priority in the background. There is no way to speed it up, because it is deliberately running at low priority so that you can get your other work done in the foreground. Ignore it for a while, and if it really gets stuck, then you might have to intervene. But it will take all afternoon to overnight to make a full backup, and that is just the way it works.

    Hello,

Thank you very much for the info. just don't understand why it was working perfectly with Yosemite, El Capitan and the first upgrade to Sierra and few weeks later, it's a nightmare.  However, I will do the backup during the nights, crossing fingers 7 hours will be enough.

    Thank again for the reply.

I try a other backup and TM was stuck on "preparation for backup".

Please read macOS Sierra: If Time Machine remains in the “preparing” stage.

The best plan of action is to let it finish. There are many factors involved and some of them are new to Sierra. For example, if you are using the new Photos app, it will take a very long time to analyze your Photos Library, during which Time Machine is relegated to a lower priority. That's new in Sierra. Even if Photos were not a factor, Time Machine would normally take a very long time to examine literally hundreds of thousands of new files that accompany an operating system upgrade.

Needless to say, if you are using any non-Apple "anti-virus" products, don't. Uninstall it according to its instructions.

the backup was very very very slow, 8 hours for 300Go.

    That is about right.
